DEGREE SHOW!

Tonight is the opening of our degree show at Manchester Metropolitan University. It should be a fantastic night and will be running from 5PM until 8PM, there is plenty of amazing work created by our peers and a couple of treats from our selves too.

As if this wasn't enough, DR.ME will be doing a screen printing workshop on Saturday the 19th of June called 'Screen if you want to go faster' of their postcards at one o'clock on the 4th floor of the Chatham Building. It would be wonderful to see some of you there!

These are some work in progress shots of a World Cup piece we have been asked to do at the Dale St. offices of Umbro. The piece is based around eleven posters featuring images of our favourite famous and infamous moments in each of the World Cups since England won in 1966, we've then been working into these images with black paint pens. We'll pop some more pictures up soon!

'An Apple A Day' at Common Bar

This has been over a year in the planning and development but on the Thursday the 13th May the first DR.ME exhibition which we created in collaboration with Melvin Galapon 'An Apple A Day' opened at Common bar in the Northern Quarter.

This show will be on until September time so if you weren't able to attend the opening party (which was great fun) then there is still time to catch it. There is work available to purchase at the bar along with a collection of postcards of all of the work featured in the show.

Massive thanks should go to all of the people that helped us along the way especially Common and Umbro.

DR.ME are in equal measures proud and saddened to announce the seventh and final chair of The Waiting Room.

As our last ever guest and to bring the month long Waiting Room exhibition to a close we have invited one of our favourite - and the countries most talented - Illustrators in the form of MR. BOWLEGS.

In a slight addition to the usual format of The Waiting Room - because we do listen to your requests - MR. BOWLEGS has agreed to do a talk on how he works and how he has got to where he is today - in life not location - alongside the live screen printing and of course the exhibition.

We hope that everyone that has made it along over the last year can make it down, equally if you've never made it to The Waiting Room before and have only watched from afar now is as good a time as any as we have all of the work from over the past year still up in The Waiting Room month long exhibition which MR. BOWLEGS will become a part of for the final day.

The Waiting Room - MONTH LONG SHOW

For the sixth chair of The Waiting Room, we are extremely excited to announce that this show will not just run for the traditional duration of a day but will be running for an entire month at Nexus Art Café in Manchester. We decided that rather than let the shows fizzle out we would try to bring them to a satisfactory close by doing it partially as a retrospective of the work that has been shown previously and partially as a look into some of the work that we have not had time to include.

The practitioners that we have confirmed so far are:

We have also hand picked some fellow students and friends in the shape of Adam Brandon, Aaron Tierney & Oyunga Gombo-Ochir from our course who's work we respect and whose continued attendance and support at The Waiting Room has been integral to its success.

There will be a few surprises throughout the month so keep your eyes peeled!

To bring the run of shows to an end we will be having one final guest on the final Sunday (7th February) who will exhibit work and do a short talk.

We will also be doing a full package of the show posters which will be screen-printed, to reserve one of these packs please email dr.me@hotmail.co.uk the packs will be priced at £10.

Two months...two months we've not blogged for. Shocking.

We could try and give you excuses for our lack of blogging, but we aren't about excuses.

We will be popping up the work that we've been hammering away at over the last 8 weeks at Uni over the coming days, is there a great deal of pattern work and collage? You know it.

So you might be wondering what this strange print is? Well, a wee while ago we headed across the Atlantic to the big apple (some like to call it New York) for a week, what a place, safe to say we both fell head over heals with it, especially Brooklyn. We arranged to meet up with easily one of our favourite illustrators Mike Perry at his studio in Brooklyn to talk about the possibility of an internship, as Mike was just about to leave to go for a meeting he invited us to talk with him in his car, to cut a long(ish) story short, after about 5 minutes talking about a couple of things (namely that we were going to see Warren G that night) he offered DR.ME an two month internship once we are finished at University. We could not be more excited about this. To illustrate this fact and to show how grateful we are, we have created a poster that we have sent to Mike to say thanks, the good DR has created a collage of a heart from images of vintage carpets and ME has created a font called C∆NT that we have applied as a two colour screen print over the top with the inscription... actually, no, if anyone can guess what it says leave a comment and we'll send the first person to get it right something nice! The type is supposed to be illegible to a certain extent hence the name.

We'll get some more stuff that we've been doing this week up for a bit of show and tell ASAP we promise!

The Waiting Room - CHRISSIE ABBOTT

For the fifth chair of The Waiting Room we were ecstatic to welcome Chrissie Abbott along with her friend and fellow illustrator Rosy Nicholas. The inclusion of Rosy had been a little last minute but it was very pleasing how the two quite different styles suited each other greatly with Chrissie's mythical collage work sitting nicely with Rosy's ink based paintings that reminded us of previous Waiting Room guest Luke Best and Nicholas Burrows from Nous Vous. As before we made the 50 zines compiling the work that was to be shown throughout the day which were all snapped up very quickly. Sadly due to the University print studio being out of action no screen printing could be done which was a real shame. After everything was taken down we all went for the traditional drink at the infamous Common bar and talked of Horses and Crabby's Cider until the time came for Chrissie and Rosy came to hop back on the train to the big smoke. During the day we had spoken a few times with a great print based illustrator called Nicholas Saunders who, at the drink at Common, kindly agreed to do the next Waiting Room for us, as Nick is very print based it'll be a strong return to the live screen printing that was so sadly missed this month.

This is a quick post as a celebration of our good friend Richard Webb, who has been nominated for a couple of awards for his short animation 'Wishful Expectations', the animation will be shown at Cornerhouse as part of the Exposures Film Festival which is pretty prestigious!

These are a selection of posters done by ME for the summer project at University which was to create promotional posters for the film club - KINO4 - that the tutors have arranged for this year. You might recognise the background design from the Shine competition poster, this is due to the fact that the initial Shine concept was based on an egg and ME wanted new designs to be born from this egg (slight metaphorical, slight literal). Each film has a subconscious connection to each design.

In our minds Chrissie is one of the most exciting and innovative new illustrators around and we are pleased to say she will be bringing her good friend and equally talented illustrator friend Rosy Nicholas. Chrissie Abbott we should add is maybe best known for her work for Little Boots but this is not the reason we have asked her to be the first female guest at The Waiting Room, her work is intriguing and exciting in equal measures and we have been super excited about what she has sent across. Miss Abbott will be exhibiting some new pieces of work for the exhibition, she will also be creating a live piece throughout the day with a bit of a craft based edge. As ever DR.ME will be creating 50 zines featuring Chrissie's work along with a few bits thrown in by Rosie to!

SHINE COMPETITION PIECE

In August 2010 ME was shortlisted for the Shine 2009 Coley Porter Bell Design competition after sending in a piece of screen printed work completed earlier in the year, (DR's piece went missing in the post clap, clap Royal Mail). After a trip down to London to do a little show and tell with his portfolio he, along with ten other finalists was set the brief of designing the poster for next years competition.

Above is the piece that has been put forward, the concept behind it stretches back to ME's childhood in the Lake District when at Easter hard boiled egg's would be decorated and then rolled (or thrown in most cases) off the town's castle ruins with the aim to see who's egg went the furthest. The winner was seldom the strongest competitor but he/she who possessed the best technique and will to succeed.

In mid October ME will travel with DR of course and some friends to the CPB offices for a cocktail party (sweet) that CPB will be throwing to announce the winner, the winner will receive £3000 and a three month work placement.

If ME wins he will most likely buy 300,000 of these...

BERGKETEN

For those that don't know, DR.ME also dabble in DJing and Live event promotion. We have recently been asked to put on a monthly event at a small but wonderful venue in Manchester's Northern Quarter called the Bay Horse. We decided to call this event BERGKETEN (translating as Mountain Range in Dutch) after DR made a trip to Amsterdam and was inspired by the language, people and the general way of life. For the opening night which is tomorrow the 10th of September. We have arranged for some bands to play live for us, two of which being from Baltimore in the US of A in the shape of FUTURE ISLANDS and EAR PWR (we think pronounced EAR POWER) and the other in the shape of our good friends and much lauded Manchester act WU LYF. We will be DJing a mixture of Hip Hop, Chicago House, a few choice cuts of the best new indie music and some records made by our friends.

We designed the flyers by collaging images of mountainscapes and other mountain based ephemera to create promotional material that was visually exciting and chose purple on a creme stock as we thought this would make it stand out from other flyers (and it was cheaper!).

For the first night we decided to make it extra special and create a mountain based (see where we're going here?) fanzine that would be given away free to the first 50 people through the door. We had a great deal of fun with this collaging pictures of mountains with unusual pictures and images that we had been wanting to use for some time. Special mention should be given to the wonderful Hannah Mort who put her extensive sewing skills to great use by sewing the spines of all 50 zines!

Pure Groove Compilations

A few weeks ago DR.ME travelled down to the big smoke to visit the lovely people at Pure Groove after we were informed that the PG3 compilation was ready.

Having listened to it about 1,000,000,000 we strongly recommend you go purchase one either from their lovely shop in Farringdon or from there equally lovely website. You will find great music by the likes of Wave Machines, My Tiger My Timing, Lung Rotter & Seven and of course our good friends MAY68 for just £5 coupled with our cover design which has been hand screen printed by Pure Groove's super talented Caspar Williamson.

Here at DR.ME we are always working so when we saw that our good friends May 68 were going to be playing with one of our favourite new acts We Have Band at one of the countries coolest new venues 'Nation of Shopkeepers' in Leeds, we decided it would be nice to create a poster so celebrate this happy occasion. Having sent it to the lovely Ashley Kollakowski who runs Nation of Shopkeepers and having it approved this will be used for the show and hopefully we will be asked to do more posters for the excellent events they promote!

We're stoked to announce that Pure Groove have selected the piece (partially viewable in previous post) that we entered to be screen printed onto the cover of their next compilation.

One of our favourite image makers Anthony Burrill illustrated the previous Pure Groove compilation so we are definitely in great company. Not sure which acts will be featured on the compilation but they are always a must have for any fan of new music and rumor has it that some of our best friends will be on there so that'll be nice!

This is the poster we have designed for a joint event we are curating with XOX, as we are taking two months off from The Waiting Room we decided to fill the gap with a special one off photography special TWR featuring one of our all time favourite photographers in Gavin Watson, Gavin will be doing a talk at our beloved Nexus Art Café as well as showing a few slides and exhibiting some of his photographs. As a part of the Manchester International Festival Gavin will also be in the window of House of Fraser doing a live photo session between 11am and 2pm. We're very excited about this!

This is the poster for Sarah Maple who is going to also be a part of the MIF and will be doing a live art installation.

Lastly this is the poster of Frank Sidebottom who will be doing what Frank Sidebottom does best in the window of House of Fraser also.

This Sunday saw the fourth chair of The Waiting Room and DR.ME were ecstatic to welcome Luke Best up from London. Luke brought a selection of his fantastic work up from his portfolio presenting a mix of giclee prints, lithography prints and original pieces. The pieces looked wonderful and had a really fantastic quality to them. At around 4PM Luke took to the screen-printing table and did us proud, so proud in fact that we still have quite a few left over. Doctoring the Guardian

As the DR is part of the Same Teens group, he was given the job of designing the layout for the two pages that were handed over to them in the Guardian Guide special about Manchester International Festival and more directly about the two days of shows that they are putting on involving Mystery Jets, Esser, Televised Crimewave and Tim Burgess, all for the ultra reasonable price of five English pounds, its selling quickly we believe so get a ticket here. The two pages in the supplement were done as a teaser to lead people to read the new online new music/fashion zine issue of XOX which the DR has also lovingly lade out, check it out here.

BLINK AND YOU'LL MISS IT.

DR.ME have been working with Oliver Wilson (son of Factory Records impresario Tony) on creating an identity, poster and flyer design for temporary (it will be open for 3 months and then disappear) late night bar BLINK. The BLINK logo and identity has also been used for a blinking neon sign that hangs over the entrance and for painted onto the walls of the club so as soon as we get some pictures we'll get them up.

Below is the flyer for BLINK, we decided that as so many clubs and bars use a regular postcard size it would be more interesting to have a square flyer. We had a lot of fun on the project, many thanks to Oliver for involving us.

The Waiting Room - MELVIN GALAPON

For the third chair of The Waiting Room, DR.ME were extremely proud to present Melvin Galapon who made the long trip up from London with around 15 pieces of work which all ranged from between A0 and A1 in size. The work was amazing and really challenged the viewer using a lot of lines and dots to create an unusual and fascinating collection of work. At around 4PM Melvin took up the ink and silkscreen and set about smashing Nous Vous's impressive record of 52 screen prints (Melvin did 74). To finish off the day our good friends Dutch Uncles finished off the day with an amazing acoustic set of six songs including a fantastic cover of Talking Heads' Naive Melody. After everything was packed away DR.ME went for a pint in our favourite local Common with Melvin and some exciting plans were formed, more information on this will follow soon!

Next month DR.ME are very excited to be welcoming Luke Best, a talented illustrator from London who will be coming up and doing some live screen printing and exhibiting some of his wonderful work.

Interdependence Exhibition

Following the mid second year show, DR.ME were asked by Beth Harvey & Debi Boniface to partake in a show that they were curating at Nexus Art Café. The show (called Interdependence) was based around Darwinism, Beth & Debby asked us to create a poster and identity. As the tagline for the show was '8 evolving artists' we decided to base the idea around an evolving octagon. The show will on until June, go look with your eyes.

Across the Pennines - Volume 7 Poster Design

DR.ME designed and screen printed the poster for the new Across the Pennines compilation. As Peter Saville designed the fold out poster in the compilation sleeve, we thought it would be appropriate to use the font he used for the New Order album 'Movement'. This poster design will also be used in Artrocker early next month.

The compilation features music by some of the best new acts in the north west and north east along with the afore mentioned Peter Saville screen printed posters and DR.ME design work.

The compilations are a bargain at £2 so we recommend you get one soon as they are done as limited edition runs of 300.

Every time we hold The Waiting Room we screen print a limited run of 20 posters. We change the colour of the posters each month running through Red, Green, Blue, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black. The image at the top of the poster is a floor plan of a waiting room and each time we make a new poster we add a seat.

For the second coming of the DR.ME curated one day Design exhibition The Waiting Room we were proud to present Manchester's own Teacake. For the show, Teacake asked us to do A1 screen-prints of some lovely images that were based around the theme of summertime as it was officially the first day of summer. This was challenging as we had not attempted anything larger than A3 before on silk-screen. The prints came out beautifully and looked great. As with the Nous Vous TWR we made a short zine for the first 50 people through the door. Teacake also had some lovely fold down posters made up to give away with the work on and a postcard competition of which the winner will be announced soon. Many thanks to Teacake, of course to Nexus Art Café (they made Teacakes especially!) and to Sebastian Matthes for doing his time lapse film (we will be posting this very soon). Next month we are extremely excited to welcome the superb Melvin Galapon up from London, lots of exciting things planned for this one so don't miss out.

Here is the poster that DR.ME have designed for the Same Teens & XOX Manchester International Festival event happening on St. Alberts Square. Its a two day event with Mystery Jets headlining both nights and Televised Crimewave, Esser and Tim Burgess supporting.

Ting Tings paint party

DR.ME assisted Sparkle Street with some of the set design for the Ting Tings Adidas paint party. There was a lot of white 12" vinyl sleeves. There was a lot of paint. There was a white Adidas top. It was fun. Thanks to JW for putting us forward for this and to Jacki B for the collaboration.

The Waiting Room - NOUS VOUS

For those of you that missed out on the first DR.ME curated one day Design Exhibition 'The Waiting Room' at Nexus Art Café, here is a brief synopsis of what happened: Nous Vous came over from Leeds and had lots of fun screen printing free posters, t-shirts and bags for people as well as doing a bit of drawing. We made 50 free fanzines featuring an exclusive 'The Waiting Room' design that we asked Nous Vous to do for the cover and also the work that was being exhibited for the first 50 through the door. There was a drawing table that everyone seemed to frequent at one point or another and (as with all good Waiting Room's) a reading table. Not only but also Jeremy Warmsley finished off the day with a lovely 3 song set on a ukulele. Many thanks to everyone who came down (especially Nous Vous) it wouldn't have been the same without you! If you didn't make it, not to worry as we have TeaCake Design for the next TWR on the 29th of March.

With L.O.V.E from...

Here are the results of the L.O.V.E. project. DR.ME spent most of Thursday the 12th screen-printing the 100 Valentines cards and then posting them on the 13th to the 100 people who emailed their addresses. We sent cards to people as close as one road down from our HQ and as far away as Quebec, Canada and we are very pleased that the majority of people seem to have received their cards.

To explain the cards design, we chose to use Helvetica and created a heart using a number (3) and a letter (V), we fused them together for the front and printed in 'enlightened red', then on the inside we had the inscription 'Open Your Heart To Another' and the heart with its 'lid' off. We feel that the Design has many ambiguous connotations so rather than explain them all, we would like to leave these up to your endless imaginations. We hope it was a pleasant surprise on the 14th.

The Waiting Room part one

Here at DR.ME we decided that there was a distinct lack of exhibitions featuring work by our favourite designers, so, instead of just crying floods of tears and beating the oak in anger we decided to approach the designers that we love and feel inspired by and exhibit their work in an intimate atmosphere on the last Sunday of each month. The first Waiting Room will feature one of the best and most exciting design collectives in Britain, Leeds based Nous Vous Collective. Also confirmed for future TWR's we have Melvin Galapon, Hvass & Hannibal, TeaCake, Mario Hugo, Luke Best, Wizard's Hat and Andreas Banderas.

L.O.V.E.

For the past four months DR.ME have had the pleasure of being tutored by John Walsh. For our mid year show each group was asked to curate an exhibition of their work. We decided that it would be appropriate to combine our work into a mosaic montage in a homage to an essay that John handed from when he was a student.

Concept Bin

We spent a day screen printing an image that was given to us by Peter Saville for our compilation label Across the Pennines (www.myspace.com/acrossthepennines). After meeting Peter during the summer and asking him if he would submit some work we were very pleased to receive an email with the 'Concept Bin' attached to it. After we designed the one side of the inlay for the compilation (Volume 7) we decided it would be a nice touch to take Peter's image an individually screen print each one (350 copies) by hand onto the back so that people could have a unique Saville poster to hang on their wall.

Triangular Helvetica

This is one of the four fonts that we have created as part of one of our first self-initiated briefs. This font is based on the outline of the classic Helvetica font. As Helvetica is very strong and serious we decided it would be interesting to put something that was quite loose and playful rather than just a block colour.

This is one of the four fonts that we have created as part of one of our self-initiated briefs. This font was designed to be illegible to a certain extent. Once the reader becomes familiar with the font, it should become more legible and therefore more rewarding.

PULP

DR.ME are the new Art Directors for Pulp Magazine. The first issue we worked on is aptly based on the theme of Health. We had to create a new identity for the magazine which we did using the font Bifurk and turning round the first letter of Pulp to create an interesting visual symmetry. This theme is also used throughout the magazine and on the Pulp website.
